Killarney is a town in County Kerry, Ireland. It is on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, part of Killarney National Park, and is home to St Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross House and Abbey, the Lakes of Killarney, MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, Paps Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall. Its natural heritage, history and location on the Ring of Kerry make Killarney a popular tourist destination. Tourism has underpinned the town's economy and shaped its development for more than two and a half centuries, and Killarney has been described the birthplace of Irish tourism.
One of the highlights of Killarney is its stunning national park, which boasts over 25,000 acres of pristine wilderness. Here, YOU can explore a diverse range of landscapes, from rolling hills and tranquil lakes to dense forests and cascading waterfalls. The park is also home to an array of wildlife, including red deer, otters, and rare birds such as the white-tailed sea eagle.
As well as its natural wonders, Killarney is also steeped in history and culture. The town itself is home to a number of historic landmarks, including Ross Castle - a 15th-century fortress that offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The Muckross Estate is another must-visit attraction, consisting of a grand Victorian mansion and beautiful gardens that date back to the 19th century.
